Key responsibilities
  • The Assistant’s prime responsibility will be the collection of data on postharvest handling and management of vegetable crops from trials conducted at the Center, as well as collecting data on socio-economic indicators and farmers' perception on postharvest technologies through on-farm dissemination trials. The Successful candidate will Work closely with the Center's Postharvest Specialist as well as other scientists to perform the following tasks.

Main activities
  • Assist scientists in organizing and conducting postharvest research experiments including data entry/compilation and statistical analysis.
  • Provide day-to-day management of assigned trials or activities.
  • Assist in organizing on-station and on-farm training on postharvest handling, storage and processing of vegetable crops.
  • Assist in organizing and conducting outreach and promotional activities, such as field days to promote the development and adoption of improved postharvest practices.
  • Assist in conducting economic cost-quantitative surveys of post-harvest losses and other field evaluation activities, including enumeration, encoding and compilation of data, and basic analysis.
  • Facilitate field visits by program visitors and participate in AVRDC research meetings as required.
  • Prepare and edit draft field reports, proof-read draft program reports, and conduct literature searches for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Provide assistance and other support services to postharvest research activities, and perform other tasks as may be assigned by AVRDC's Postharvest Specialist and other scientists.

Qualifications
  • BSc or higher degree in a relevant subject in the field of Horticulture, Agronomy, Food Science or Agricultural Engineering
  • Experience with and proven skills in the accurate collection of agronomic and socio-economic datain field trials are an essential requirement.
  • Good agro-economic background with focus on horticultural value-chains.
  • Excellent computer skills in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili (spoken and written)
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact with partners, horticultural value chain actors (i.e., farmers, traders, brokers, processors etc.).

  • The candidate is expected to have a minimum of five years of relevant experience in a similar position.
  • ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) certification will be an added advantage.

  • Strengthen capacity of partners and PLHIV support groups in improving community linkages
  • Conduct routine site visits for technical support and improvement of performance in related program areas
  • Provide technical support in best approaches for improving referrals and follow – up of clients in the community
  • Work closely with Senior Program Officer, Communication & Community Outreach; Participate in development and transition of IEC materials for community support.
  • Organize trainings for counselors in the AGPAHI supported sites
  • Monitor implementations of community linkage activities by the sub grantees
  • Initiate regional meetings for HIV/AIDs partners to increase networking in the AGPAHI supported areas
  • Participate in preparation and planning for different AGPAHI  community based meetings
  • Together with Senior Program Officer, Communication & Community Outreach, take leadership in identifying  Organization community  success stories for publications
  • Compile and prepare monthly,  quarterly , semi-annual and annual programmatic report on community linkage activities
  • Undertake any other duties as assigned by the  supervisor

Qualifications, Skills and ability
Advance Diploma, Degree or equivalent, (in Social Sciences or Community Development) preferably with  Master’s degree relevant to the position
Preference will be given to the following:
Knowledge in HIV/AIDS and the Tanzania Government structures
Proven experience in working with rural communities in problem identification, setting solutions/planning and implementation.

The purpose of this position is to strengthen the implementation and management of overall laboratory quality assurance activities and training as needed for the AGPAHI supported sites. Program Officer Laboratory Services [POLS] will provide direct technical assistance to laboratory sites and/or serve a coordinating role in ensuring that the appropriate resources are recruited in order to assist sites in maintaining the highest level of quality systems.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensuring good quality clinical laboratory services in AGPAHI supported sites in Shinyanga region:
  • Conduct Laboratory specific supportive supervision and Laboratory Mentorship
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of Laboratory Quality Systems within the AGPAHI supported labs; identify areas for quality improvement and provide advice and technical assistance.
  • Ensure that SOPs, laboratory manuals, guidelines, worksheets and forms are appropriately utilized at all sites and assist in the modification of these forms whenever appropriate.
  • Prepare and facilitate trainings for laboratory staff and other stakeholders, to ensure good quality lab services.
  • Liaise with the AGPAHI Technical in Shinyanga and HQ, to provide strategic technical guidance on laboratory activities in field and strategies for improvement.
  • Assisting EID activities (Lab Technical assistance, samples, results transportation, DBS SCM) in the Geita Shinyanga and Simiyu regions.
  • Ensures that laboratories have an uninterrupted supply of reagents as well as the conditions necessary to ensure reagent stability
  • Assesses laboratories for current capacity and guides capacity building efforts
  • Facilitate supply chain management system on laboratory reagents and equipment through central procurement system and Medical store.

Capacity building of lab services in districts and sites:

  • Liaise with Laboratory Quality Officers and other stakeholders in the district and region in developing strategies to improve and standardize the quality systems in all of the AGPAHI supported laboratories.
  • Liaise with the RPM and RPC to identify additional regional technical assistance needs and resources for laboratory quality assurance.
  • Actively propose innovative strategies to RPM and RPC for strengthening laboratory activities in the region, including the local capacity to implement and supervise these activities.

Reporting:

  • Responsible for Lab related data collection, analysis and reporting and proper documentation.
  • Collaborate with the RPM, RPC to regularly inform all local stakeholders about the AGPAHI supported laboratory activities in the region.
  • Provide any other information / reports as requested by the RPM or RPC.

 Qualifications, Skills and ability
  • Advanced diploma or equivalent in Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Experience working in a clinical laboratory
  • Experience with laboratory tests and techniques required for the diagnosis and monitoring of the following (but not limited to): HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria, STIs, and other infectious diseases.
  • Experience working with laboratory equipment, reagents and consumables required for the above-mentioned infections
  • Preference given to those who have proven ability to service and properly maintain laboratory equipment
  • Knowledgeable of MoHSW laboratory standards and procedures

 Travel:
  • In order to achieve the goals at least 50% of working days will require local travel in Shinyanga region.

  • Consult with the CD and the Finance/Admin Manager to manage the organization’s legal compliance
  • Participate in any other activities, which may be required to be undertaken to fulfill the objectives of the organization.
  • Work in conjunction with the CD to represent Room to Read to external parties in country
  • During any period of an extended absence by the Country Director, the Advisor will be delegated full authority of the Country Director by the Chief of International Operations.

  • Meetings/Networking:
  • As an Advisor to the CD, explore opportunities for partnerships and knowledge sharing with NGOs, experts and institutions involved in related education initiatives
  • As an Advisor to the CD, develop and manage relationships with other NGO’s, government officials and appropriate educational facilities/authorities; schedule and attend meetings with them as needed to coordinate planning and implementation of projects
  • Represent Room to Read at relevant meetings and assist in planning and hosting donor visits

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Related B.S/B.A. or equivalent degree, master’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of ten years of professional experience in the related field
  • Good knowledge and understanding of operational issues, including project management, fiscal integrity, strategic and tactical planning and implementation, resource management
  • Strong planning, budgetary, supervising, and program development skills
  • Ability to travel frequently to provinces throughout the Region
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English

Conduct awareness meeting and trainings on adolecsent Sexual Reproductive Health to youth in and out of school and advocates for healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies
Maintain good work relationship with  communities, community leaders and other key project stakeholders at all levels of the project implementation
Perform any other duties as may be directed by Health Technical Lead

Qualifications and Experience:
Certificate or Diploma or higher qualification in Community Health
Conversant with sexual, reproductive health and able to carry out counseling work in relation to Family Planning methods/issues
Knowledge of Community Hygiene and Sanitation /WASH
Capable of carrying out Advocacy work in villages /Community mobilisation to achieve total behaviour change cutting across all age groups and gender
Public Health Nurses will be considered
